Day 11 of Radiation-Monday 21st

Today is February 21st. Happy Birthday Andreas and Merigrace!!!!!

This was a tough weekend for Gwyn. The 10 doses of Radiation to date has burned the trachea and esophagus to the point where she was unable to swallow, not even water. The prescriptions to help deaden the pain had little affect. We arrived at the hospital this morning and after an evaluation by the doctor, she was admitted. She was becoming dehydrated so she has been on IV fluids ever since. The new drug (Xeloda) had to be stopped as well because it has to be taken in pill form.
Radiation is now on hold until the medical staff can bring the pain under control. The most important thing right now is to keep her comfortable and push fluids. The doctors are also treating her for a secondary infection, which is common when patients receive treatments that involve the throat. They are not overly concerned with this because it is easily treated with IV medication. For me, it is tuff to watch her suffer and not be able to do much for her. All I can do is ask for guidance and I know He will provide!!

Patti and Rob flew in to Milwaukee today and are on their way to the hospital. I know Patti has been anxious to see her mom and to be here to help pack things up to come home. At this point I don't know when that will be. We will just wait and see how she responds to the IV overnight. I know she wants to come home and all of us want her to be home, but not until she is finished with what the physicians have prescribed.

Gwyn and I would like to say thank you for all the well wishes and prayers!! Please continue to send them our way. And Rena thanks for the goodies for Molly and I!!

  1. Robbin...please give Gwyn a hug and kiss from me! I'm so sorry for her pain, but the IV rehydrating her body and the pain meds will make her feel so much better. Tell Patti hi and give her a hug too..I'm so glad you have someone with you..you hang in there okay and please take care of yourself. Hopefully all will settle out and you guys can get this done and come home soon! Take care..hold each other tight..and know that many people are there with you in spirit. Much love to all!

  2. Dear Gwyn and Rob,
Lots and lots of prayers. So sorry that this is happening. I pray that the pain can be brought under control soon and that something good will come from all of this radiation. Gwyn, try to keep staying strong, but if you feel like giving up for a few moments>>>go ahead...God will sustain you for those few moments! He is with you both even though like Jesus may have thought...it may feel like he isn't! I hope both of you can rest while Patti and Rob are out there and let your minds and bodies just relax and think only happy thoughts! Just know that so many are praying for you both! Love you...come home soon!

  4. Well... darn it~ argh.
Aunt Gwyn is my hero~ her strength, courage and grace awe me on a daily basis. I am constantly encouraged by her faith, dignity and determination~ Gwyn is not only a powerful model of the human spirit but represents true beauty of the heart.
Thank you for the wishing Merigrace a Happy Birthday. Today, on the way to school~ she said, "I like being 8yrs. old, it's fun." Over night she has become more mature~ not sure that is all that great, but she sure is cute and it was super special that she didn't have school.
Bryan and Luke are doing well. We skyped last night. Bryan and Dr. Kennedy were able to see 17 kids and today have 20 on the schedule. Sounds like it was challenging, as the power went out multiple times :)
Luke was able to work w/ his football coach teaching kids football blocks and plays. Luke looked a little exhausted~ good right?
He and Bryan (the other day) climbed a volcano and bought marshmallows from a guy w/ a machine gun~ then roasted them at the top? We seem to attract people w/ guns?
Love you dearly and my continued prayers for encouragment, strength and a spirit of joy to surround you.
    Lots and lots of love!
    Audra
